An interesting conversation about City planning and the (not) possibility of doing more than planning. Making plans work in practice is the most difficult effort. The mentality of the government and the mentality of the citizens are keeping each other in a status quo position. No vision is developed, because there is no confidence in the people (and money) who must helping to realize new idea’s. New idea’s are also not very well over thought or researched (not enough money and not enough expertise) . Every body works in its own bubble. Bobi an d Dwita could tell us very well how things do and don’t work here in Yogya. The finger is often pointed at the government, or the lac of a strong Maier. And the topic problem = CORRUPTION.
Also this interview was recorded (later on this site).

In the evening of 31 may we had a meeting with the Greenmapgroup based in Yogyakarta.
starting from the left E, Lieke, Thomas Widiyanto and Joyo.
They are actually mapping (area’s in) the city. All kinds of facility’s which are very common for us in Europe, are not common here. reading maps for instance, is not usual. The javanese are having an oral tradition. fSo they start to give workshops to the citizens to make them conscious about the daily life environment and give them the notion that they can improve there own situation. They start to visualize that in maps and icons. The problem the cityzens come with can be about garbage problems but also water drainage in the street. Awareness and education and responsibility and self-esteem are key words this evening. Because also here there is no confidence in the government. This green map group (who all have other jobs to for see in there daily life needs, and do this in there spare time, no payment) is operating on there own, no help from the gouvernment . The Dutch embassy however (!) support them on one subject. The in heritage area’s and buildings. So for instance the Alun Alun Place ( a place which was from the Sultan in early days, but now it is given to the public) Greenmap asked the people what to do with the place. The place is already occupied by all kinds of instant activities. This process of asking the opinion from the locals is also new. The Sultan (the 10th) has also an idea. Lets make a big parking lot under the whole area. The people agree because the Sultan is the boss. So this proces of making the people more aware is a long way. But worth it.
Hope I reconstruct our talk right. If not, please Greenmap group put a comment below. (it can be in Bahasa, we’ll translate it later)

Hi there, I hope you enjoy your meetings with people. I feel bad to leave you to Jakarta in this busy-energetic condition you have.
Some people here (and there) warned me of the attacking of FPI, since I went to Jakarta. You may have heard the story from the papers. This group of moslem people, encalled themselves with Forum Pembela Islam (Islam Defender Forum) or FPI, have attacked another community which has their concerns in freedom of having religion and believe (AKKBB-National Alliance of Freedom of Having Religions and Believe). This attacking was happened in the National Monument, Jakarta-couple days ago.
The fact that there are several civil wars which was happened between two different religions is also an issue in this country. Back then, we never had any problem living side by side with people from different background, different religion. I were still thinking of us as a very tolerable nation. I do not think I need to re-consider this thought. Then, what’s their problem? :)
cheers,

Ya Miranda, we heard about this attack.
Gentong informed us while he was checking a blog about this (see on this blog the page religion and politics). And then we saw it also in the newspaper. Hope the police will catch them and hope they will be legally processed (as the president put it). I wonder if this is also really happening. Does the police take action in this? and does the law its job?
Well I hope you are not in the middle of it.
Untill next week.
